Addiction can consume someone’s thoughts and take control of the way they interact, function and behave. Through therapy at the right time, you can gain insight into identifying the underlying causes and factors that lead to compulsive or repetitive patterns. There is often a huge amount of shame, denial and secrecy around social habits that develop into more destructive compulsions. This may take the form of addictive: drinking, drug-taking, sexual thoughts or activity, gaming, gambling or internet usage. Therapy can also support you if you are affected by a friend or family member’s addiction.
