Since 2020, online therapy has become a normal part of how many people access support. At Hackney Therapy House, many of our therapists offer both online therapy and face-to-face sessions in our rooms in Dalston. So how do you decide which is right for you?
The benefits of face-to-face therapy
- A dedicated space – coming to a calm, private therapy room can help you leave everyday pressures at the door.
- Fuller communication – being in the same room makes it easier to pick up on body language and silence.
- A clear boundary – travelling to and from sessions gives you time to prepare and reflect.

The benefits of online therapy
- Convenience – no travel time, which can make weekly sessions easier to fit around work and family.
- Accessibility – helpful if you have mobility difficulties, health conditions, or live further away.
- Continuity – you can keep working with the same therapist if you travel or move.
- Comfort – some people find it easier to open up from their own home.
Is online therapy as effective?
Research suggests that, for many common difficulties such as anxiety and depression, online therapy can be as effective as meeting in person. What matters most is the relationship you build with your therapist and feeling able to talk openly.
Things to consider
For online sessions you will need a reliable internet connection and a private, quiet space where you will not be overheard. Face-to-face sessions may suit you better if home does not feel private, if you prefer a clear separation between therapy and home life, or if you are working with difficult experiences where being in the room together feels more containing.
You do not have to choose one forever. Some clients mix both, for example meeting in person most weeks and online when needed.
