Kat Hudson

Integrative Arts Psychotherapist (UKCP, HCPC)

About Me

I am a UKCP and HCPC registered Integrative Arts Psychotherapist, working with adults aged 18 and over. I see clients in person and online, mostly on a mid to long-term basis, however I can offer short-term work and respect that everyone’s circumstances are different.

I hold a Master of Arts degree (MA) in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy, and a Post Graduate Certificate in The Therapeutic Arts – both through the Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE). I also have a professional background in textile design and hold a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) degree in Embroidered Textiles.

I work to the ethics and codes of practice of the above registering bodies, and am supported by UKCP and HCPC registered supervisors. I am committed to regular, ongoing professional development, which further supports my therapeutic work.

Experience

I have been working in adult mental health for over 7 years, in areas such as trauma, eating disorders, addictions, neurodiversity, depression, anxiety and perinatal mental health. I believe however that everyone’s circumstances are unique and am therefore open to working with your personal story. As well as working privately, I have worked for charities and the NHS (in Secondary Care), with adults of diverse backgrounds.

My Approach

I integrate various psychological viewpoints so that I can respond openly to your individual needs. I work alongside you, at your own pace, and remain curious about what comes up in the moment, so that you can discover your own path and see your potential. I offer an empathic, non-judgmental space for you to explore what is troubling you and am open to what you wish to bring.

I am inspired by attachment theory, object relations theory, transactional analysis (TA), and Gestalt; however my primary focus is on the therapeutic relationship, and building more satisfying relationships with yourself and those around you. I believe that a lot of our struggles stem from relational injuries, and that through rewarding relational experiences, healing or growth can begin.

Arts Psychotherapy

The arts offer an opportunity to explore and communicate your feelings in a non-verbal way. You do not have to use them but it can be especially helpful when this feels difficult through words.

I believe the arts can connect us with our less familiar, or unconscious ‘parts’, which can lead to a greater understanding of ourselves, our circumstances and our resources. We might have discarded these parts of ourselves when previous circumstances didn’t welcome them, but expressing them creatively can offer a sense of catharsis, and a space to challenge any coping behaviours that no longer serve us. Through doing this, we can become more of who we are and move towards new and fulfilling ways of relating and functioning.

Art can also ‘hold’ difficult feelings on our behalf, and offer a safe way of communicating them. They help us to separate and observe them from a distance, so that we can gain more agency over the changes we wish to make. (The art forms I work with are listed on my website’s ‘About’ page.)

Ultimately, art therapy is about process and not technical skill! It is about communicating what is happening for you internally, so that you can make peace with your feelings, and more helpfully navigate your way through life.

Sessions and Fees

My fees are £70 for in person sessions, and £65 online. I do offer concessionary spaces (e.g. to students or those on low incomes), however, these are subject to availability. (Please let me know if you require sessions at a lower rate).

I offer a free, initial consultation, either online (via Zoom) or over the phone. This gives us the opportunity to get a sense of each other and to discuss any questions you may have.

I work in person at Hackney Therapy House on Tuesday mornings/ early afternoons, and online on Thursdays. (I also work at another practice on Wednesdays and Fridays).
